Science Manager

About the role

A mid-level manager reporting to the Science Director, coordinating biodiversity research, inventory and monitoring; leading biodiversity data management, analysis and reporting; supervising science field and research staff; and strengthening the use of scientific evidence in conservation planning, protected area management and community engagement. The role supervises the Science Ranger Team Leader and Research Officers. It is based at the main office on Ogaldez Street in Punta Gorda, with work across the Golden Stream Field Station and the Maya Golden Landscape in southern Belize.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Science Director in further developing the science programme and mainstreaming science across programmes
  • Work with the Science Director to plan, design and modify monitoring methods, and inform research officers and the ranger team
  • Lead training for technical staff to strengthen internal data management, analysis and reporting
  • Develop ranger monitoring schedules and work with research officers on field implementation
  • Manage science programme resources, including fuel, vehicle requests, rations and temporary labour requests
  • Lead the seasonal inventory of programme equipment in communication with programme staff
  • Implement regular data validation and support the team with proper data management procedures
  • Lead analysis of programme biodiversity data, with support from the Science Director
  • Coordinate and prepare technical, scientific and project reports to agreed timelines and quality standards
  • Support the Science Director in updating internal documents such as the BRIM Strategy and the Sustainable Use Strategy
  • Represent the organisation at national working groups, events and workshops
  • Liaise with the Community Outreach and Livelihoods team to share research and monitoring results with communities
  • Contribute to the annual Science Programme workplan and budget
  • Manage science-relevant projects as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in conservation science, biology, natural resource management, applied ecology or a related field, with at least 5 years of applied field research and data analysis experience
  • 2 years of experience in conservation with a focus on terrestrial resources
  • Passionate about wildlife conservation and community development
  • Excellent technical writing
  • Experience working on research projects and with large datasets, including statistical analysis
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver's licence

Preferred qualifications

  • Project management experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with the culture and traditions of the Toledo District
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people with low literacy or English as a second language when creating written materials
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people, including a multicultural in-house team, using tact, diplomacy and flexibility
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks and meet internal and external deadlines
  • Meticulous attention to detail, dependable and reliable, with a positive attitude
