Supervisor, Substation Construction
About the role
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is hiring a Supervisor, Substation Construction for the Transmission and Interconnection Projects Department of its Transmission and Interconnection Division, based on Magazine Road, Belize City. The supervisor oversees and coordinates daily substation construction at assigned project sites, making sure work is done safely, to quality standards and to approved drawings and specifications, and supports inspection, testing, commissioning and close-out.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily substation construction activities at assigned project sites
- Verify issued-for-construction drawings, create as-built mark-ups and carry out drawing audits
- Direct company personnel and contractors so work is completed safely, efficiently and to approved drawings, specifications and standards
- Monitor construction progress and report status, issues and resource needs to the Project Engineer
- Coordinate labour, tools, equipment and materials on site
- Verify that construction work meets approved quality requirements
- Coordinate daily construction activities with contractors, operations personnel and other departments
- Identify construction issues and escalate technical matters needing engineering decisions to the Project Engineer
- Maintain site records, daily reports, construction logs and progress documentation
- Verify completed work before inspection and acceptance
- Enforce safety policies, procedures and safe work practices
- Conduct toolbox meetings and routine site safety inspections
- Ensure compliance with environmental, electrical and occupational safety requirements
- Investigate and report incidents, hazards and near misses, and implement corrective actions
- Monitor workmanship against construction standards and technical specifications
- Coordinate inspections and address deficiencies
- Coordinate the completion of construction activities before commissioning
- Support the Project Engineer and commissioning personnel during inspections, testing and energisation
- Make sure deficiencies found during commissioning are corrected promptly
- Help prepare punch lists and complete final close-out
- Support safety and environmental initiatives and compliance in the area of responsibility
- Set goals, conduct performance appraisals, and mentor and train team members
- Support the revision of department process flows and policies, identify trends and recommend actions to management
- Prepare cost estimates and detailed work plans for mid-size to large substation projects
- Assist the Manager with the daily administration of the department and direct the work of support staff
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with five years' experience in the construction or maintenance of electrical substations, or an Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering with ten years' such experience
- Strong leadership and team management skills, including motivating and delegating to diverse teams
- Rational judgment, decisiveness and creativity
- Ability to identify, analyse and solve problems
- Good organisational and time-management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Project, and computer-aided design (CAD) applications
