Assistant Accountant General, Treasury Department

About the role

The Treasury Department (Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Finance) is recruiting an Assistant Accountant General to help the Accountant General manage and supervise the District Sub-Treasuries and make sure all government cash and stores are properly accounted for. The post reports to the Accountant General and supervises Finance Officers and support staff. This is an established post (Circular No. 72 of 2026). Terms and conditions of employment are governed by the Belize Constitution (Public Service) Regulations 2014, the Financial and Stores Orders, and the Finance and Audit (Reform) Act.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Treasury main office and sub-treasury operations, including reconciliation, fiscal management, accounts, debt management, cash, administration and public service delivery
  • Develop accounting systems, procedures and policies
  • Conduct announced and unannounced inspections and investigations
  • Manage and mentor staff, set objectives and complete performance appraisals
  • Monitor government accounts and run cash surveys
  • Supervise revenue receipts and expenditure
  • Approve invoices, payroll, pension and salary advances, and purchase orders
  • Prepare financial statements and contribute to the budget estimates
  • Contribute to strategic and operational plans and recommend legislative amendments
  • Advise the Ministry of Finance on prudent management of revenue and expenditure

Requirements

  • Recognized master's degree in Accounting, Public Sector Management, Public Administration, Management Studies, Business Administration or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years as Senior Accounting/Finance Officer I
  • Experience supervising professional staff as part of a senior executive team
  • Professionalism, integrity and confidentiality
  • Teamwork, communication, attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Belize Constitution, Public Service Regulations, Financial and Stores Orders and government procedures
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, electronic forms and government accounting packages

Preferred qualifications

  • Professional designation in accounting or auditing
