Economic/Commercial Specialist

About the role

The U.S. Mission in Belize is hiring an Economic/Commercial Specialist for the Political/Economic office of the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position. The specialist is the Embassy's expert and advisor on economic, energy, commercial, transportation, and environment, science, technology and health issues in Belize. The vacancy is open until filled. Applications are reviewed from September 14, 2026, then every two weeks. Announcement number: Belmopan-2026-15.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Embassy's subject matter expert and advisor on economic, energy, commercial, transportation, and environment, science, technology and health issues in Belize
  • Build and maintain contacts with policy leads and experts in national and local government, the private sector and civil society
  • Research and analyse economic issues
  • Prepare written products, analytical and research briefings, and oral presentations for Embassy leadership, staff and high-level U.S. government visitors
  • Coordinate events and high-level (VIP) U.S. government visits
  • Manage technical assistance programs between the U.S. government and the Government of Belize day to day
  • Serve as Grants Officer Representative for U.S. government-funded grants
  • Work with the Political Assistant, providing support and backup coverage as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Public Sector Management, International Business Relations, Management and Social Sciences, or Communication
  • At least three years' experience in policy analysis, project or program management, government, law, marketing, business administration, or economic, energy or environmental research and analysis
  • Fluent English (speaking, reading and writing); this may be tested
  • Able to communicate complex topics and analysis objectively, in writing and orally, to a variety of audiences
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, other software and internet resources
  • Able to analyse and manipulate economic and other data for briefings, reports and strategic advice
  • Valid Class A driver's licence, held for at least five years
  • Must be 25 years or older, under the Embassy's driver safety policy
  • Must be able to obtain a security certificate and pass a background investigation; a pre-employment medical exam may be required
