About the role

Belize Sugar Industries is hiring a Harvester/Heavy Duty Operator in Orange Walk. The operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a harvester used to cut green or burnt sugar cane, as well as other heavy-duty equipment such as tractor trucks, loaders and bulldozers. The role also requires a working knowledge of these machines' mechanical functions, including basic parts identification, routine maintenance and minor repairs.

Responsibilities

Operate the machines safely and efficiently.
Follow all instructions and procedures given by supervisors.
Communicate with supervisors and mechanics about repairs and maintenance, and report any mechanical failure to supervisors immediately.
Maintain a safe, clean and efficient work environment.
Support other agricultural team activities as required, including cane burning, in-field harvesting assistance and water transportation.
Report to the workplace and the assigned transportation pickup location on time.
Inspect the equipment thoroughly and verify its condition before use.
Complete the tractor checklist and log at the end of each shift.

Requirements

Able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Able to identify and respond to routine machine-related issues.
Able to perform physically demanding tasks and work under unusual or high-pressure conditions, including repairs to critical machine components.
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials needed to operate machinery safely and effectively.
Excellent communication and observation skills.
Able to motivate others and foster effective teamwork.

Preferred qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification or training in heavy equipment or agricultural machinery.
One to three years' experience operating harvesting or heavy agricultural equipment.
Valid driver's licence; Class E or heavy-duty equipment licence is an asset.
