Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic

About the role

The Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic carries out diagnostics, preventive maintenance, repairs and overhauls on agricultural heavy equipment, including diesel engines, harvesters, tractors, transport vehicles and hydraulic systems, both during the crop and out of crop.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical faults
  • Carry out engine rebuilds and transmission, brake, steering and suspension repairs
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, hoses and fittings
  • Run scheduled preventive maintenance to manufacturer and company standards
  • Inspect machinery regularly for wear, defects or safety issues
  • Maintain and repair sugar cane harvesters, including cutter systems, feed rollers, elevators, choppers, hydraulic controls, base cutters and fans
  • Use diagnostic tools, manuals and computerized systems where possible
  • Troubleshoot diesel injection, electronic controls, sensors and engine management systems
  • Follow safety procedures and ensure proper use of PPE, tools and lifting equipment
  • Help identify and request spare parts
  • Guide apprentices and junior mechanics

Requirements

  • High school diploma in vocational or technical studies, or a certificate in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics, automotive technology or a related field
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in heavy equipment or diesel mechanic work
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulics
  • Skilled at troubleshooting mechanical and electrical faults
  • Familiar with agricultural and off-road equipment
  • Able to operate workshop tools, diagnostic equipment and lifting devices
  • Able to handle physically demanding work, including lifting heavy components and prolonged standing
  • Problem-solving, time management, communication and teamwork skills; able to work under pressure

Preferred qualifications

  • Technical or vocational training in heavy-duty maintenance
  • Agricultural equipment and cane harvester experience (highly preferred)
  • Hydraulics, welding and electrical troubleshooting skills
